The Power of Words

The Power of Words

By now we all know the importance of using positive speech as opposed to negative. We’ve all read The Secret. We know about the Law of Attraction. We get it. So then why is it so difficult to do when we’re in a situation where we need it the most?

I was having another one of those weeks, like the one I talked about in my previous blog (The Power of Perspective).

As always, I turned to my coach to help me through it. I was sitting in a session, talking about how stressed I was because I had another workshop to facilitate that evening. It was a workshop called True Colors, which was supposed to be fun and lighthearted. The idea was to take the pressure off of finding all the answers, and  just feel into what is.

And yet, I felt completely weighed down at the prospect of it all. When I explained to my coach how overwhelmed I was feeling again, we took some time to walk through what was going on for me. I had been taking on too much again, and needed to let go and prioritize. After taking a moment to reflect, I said to my coach with a sigh of relief,  “The only thing I actually have to worry about today is my True Colors session.”  My coach responded, “Or, you could say, the awesome thing I get to do today is facilitate a True Colors session.”

What a difference that one sentence made. By looking at it in a different light, my mind was able to shift. Instead of worrying about what needed to be done I was focussed on how much fun the workshop was going to be.

At that moment not only had the weight lifted, but my spirit lifted as well. I had gotten myself into a place where everything was a worry once again. Just by changing that sentence, I was ready to go into that session with a much higher level of energy.  It was no longer a burden.

There were still issues at the event, of course. I had borrowed a projector and a screen that didn’t fit the space. Before the session with my coach, that would have thrown me for a loop. Instead, we laughed at the ridiculousness of trying to cram a seven foot screen into a tiny living room. In the end, it didn’t matter. Everyone had a great time and learned something that day.

Sometimes just changing one word can change our entire outlook, and when our outlook changes, so does everything else.

Leadership

Would it surprise you to know that “Managing, Supervising, and Leading” are skills that have nothing to do with your age? Stepping into a Supervisor/Manager/Leader role is not always easy. You go from doing the work, to motivating and inspiring others to do the work.

Speaking

When I first started public speaking, I spoke quickly, quietly and got off that stage as soon as possible. Enter toastmasters, Now I can stand on a stage, drop my script and speak for 20 minutes off the cuff.

Coaching

Having a coach is having someone in our corner that you can discuss anything with. A coach is held to the same level of confidentiality you are. You have everything that you need, a coach just helps you to find your wisdom and remind you of the skills you already possess.
